Disturbing Photos

It was the early 1900s and Belgian had an invisible, iron fist on the Congo, which no one could see. Their brutality against the Congo was kept in the dark, until an English Missionary named Alice Seeley Harris saw the horrors in the colony. After experiencing these scarring images, she decided to use her camera to take and share pictures of the events around the world. "Alice Seeley Harris' photographs revealed to the world the shocking truth of exploitation, murder and slavery in the Congo" (NML). Knowing the dangers of exposing the Congo, she spent many years making it her mission to justify the liberation of the Congo. Her photos changed the world's view of Belgium's control of the Congo, and eventually become the justification for Congolese independence from King Leopold II.
