NYT Journalist in South Africa

Recently, New York Times journalist Sarah Khan spent three days in the city of Johannesburg, South Africa. The fast developing city is not well known to most, which is why Khan wanted to take time to explore the budding area. Despite the development, "large parts of Johannesburg's city center can still feel gritty...[as] crime remains an issue." While in Johannesburg, Khan explored the local food, including a restaurant that serve South African dishes with Asian influences, and she took time to get involved with local culture by going to see some live musical performances. Jazz is big in Johannesburg, and big influences like the late Hugh Masekela brought jazz to the cities' roots. Khan spent that last two days visiting local markets and museums.
