Welsh first as surgeons use 3D printed implant after
removing chest tumour from an Abergavenny man
A hospital in Wels has pioneered the use of the first three-dimensional(3D) body part on a human patient. The use of laboratory produced human parts on actual medical cases has been a fantasy even for the medically advanced part of the world for a long time. Cardiothoracic surgeon Ira Goldsmith and his team performed the surgery on a 71 years old man, Mr. Peter Maggs. The surgery took 2 fewer hour than the traditional surgery, which would use a cement prosthesis, prepared at the time of surgery. "Mr. Maggs developed a lump in his chest which he initially thought was a cyst but was later diagnosed as a sarcoma – a cancer of the soft tissue – in the cartilage of one of his ribs." Said Dr. Goldsmith, the head of the team. "It was a very extensive growth that needed to be removed. However, removing it also meant removing part of the breastbone and three ribs." he added. The surgery left a big opening on the chest wall. But thanks to the new technology the surgeons where able to reconstruct the chest back. Mr. Maggs is now recovering beyond expectation.
