One of Mexico’s most respected journalist, Javier Valdez
Cardenas, was shot and killed this past year. He was the sixth journalist
murdered in the past 5 months. The violence towards reporters in Mexico has
only continued to rise since then. Journalist are constantly threatened,
beaten, harassed and assaulted within their line of work. They also run the
risk of being robbed for their expensive equiptment. Because journalism often
involves exposing those in powerful positions, these reporters are frequently forced
to flee in fear. “Research
recently revealed that 41% of journalists in Mexico were reporting symptoms of
PTSD - more than those covering conflict.”
