In 23rd March, 1954 journalist Ernie Pyle was killed by Japanese machine-gun fire. During the World War 2, he was one of the most popular American war correspondent. In 1942, he went overseas as war correspondent and covered the North African campaign, the invasions of Sicily and Italy. He liked writing more about the experiences of the enlisted men, his descriptions of D-Day scene, "It was a lovely day for strolling along the seashore. Men were sleeping on the sand, some of them sleeping forever. Men were floating in the water, but they didn’t know they were in the water, for they were dead.” He also won the Pulitzer Price that year for distinguished correspondent. Pyle is buried at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Hawaiian island of Oahu. [1 image, 1link, 1quote, 110 words]
