Discovering Kurdistan

In May of 2017, New York Times journalist Tim Neville traveled to Iraqi Kurdistan in a NYT travel special labeled "Explorer." Neville begins his journey "on the western fringes of Kurdistan...in the north of Iraq that is home to 5.2 million." Here, he explores an old Christian monastery that once housed thousands of monks, but now has been reduced to five.

Neville's article gives insights on the lives of the Kurds, "a stateless people who populate the border regions between Iraq, Turkey, Iran and Syria." He later comments that it "seemed like a miracle" that he felt safe traveling to this part of Iraq, and perhaps it signals that peace can someday be a reality.
