Honoring Historical Figures at Columbia University

Columbia University has chosen to honor two of the schools most historic African American stories.
50+ years after Lucile Bulford's first application to Columbia's journalist program was denied the University granted her an honorary doctorate degree for humanities.  Lincoln University created a journalism program for African American student but "Bulford refused to enroll in the new Lincoln program, she claimed, "that she was more experienced in journalism than the instructors."  Although Lucile never attended Columbia University she went on to do great things for the community. She became the publisher and editor of a newspaper The Kansas City Call, an influential newspaper in black media.  With a unanimous vote they are now honoring her by naming a new residence hall after her.  Another patron they are honoring is a gentleman by the name Gus Ridgel. He was the first black graduate of Columbia University.  They have decided to name their atrium hall after him.
