Judge Honors Victims As Reported by Areva Martin

This week we saw Larry Nassar, former physician for USA Gymnastics accused of multiple accounts of sexual assault, forced to listen as female athletes confronted the doctor with how his abuse impacted their lives.  As I was reading on time.com,  journalist Areva Martin reported on the backlash Michigan Judge Rosemarie Anquilina has received for sentencing Nassar to up to 175 years in prison, in addition to the 60 years he has already been sentenced with for child pornography charges.  Critics of Judge Aquilina’s tough courtroom talk and allowance of multiple victim impact statements, have accused the judge of turning the courtroom into a circus.  As Martin said, “By allowing the victims to tell their stories of abuse at the hands of an admitted sexual predator, Judge Aquilina was honoring, not bucking, a time-honored tradition of the criminal justice system.” [1 image, 2 links, 1 quotation, 138 words]
