On Friday, February 2nd, many people stopped what they were doing
and turned on the television to watch a groundhog in Pennsylvania predict the
weather. This festivity is a 132 year long running tradition of a
groundhog named Punxsutawney Phil who supposedly able to tell us the future of
the weathers. Madison Park writes, “the idea is, the groundhog wakes up from
hibernation on the 2nd, and if it sees its shadow, there will be six more weeks
of winter. If it doesn't, warmer weather is just around the corner.” This long
going tradition began in Europe and was actually brought to America by the
Germans in the 1700s. Even though other groundhogs live in the United States,
Punxsutawney Phil, is the most famous and the title of Phil has been given to
many successor groundhogs. Gobbler’s Knob is where he predicts the weather for
his watchers before going into to hibernation. Madison uses examples and chunks
of interesting history in the article to keep the reader entertained
throughout. [1 image, 1 link, 1 quote, and 169 words]
