Puppy Mills Lead to A New Puppy Bill

Puppy mills are establishments that breed puppies for sale, putting profit over the well being of the dog. An article by Carl Campanile reports on the Queens lawmaker Sen, Michael Gianaris and his proposal that could effectively put the puppy mills out of business. While not outright banning the so called "puppy mills", pet shops and stores would be barred from selling pets supplied by puppy mills and only being allowed to sell animals that are obtained from legitimate animal rescue agencies or shelters. According to Gianaris, “There are thousands of cats and dogs wanted for adoption that are stranded in shelters because of the puppy mills". The legislation is modeled after a law that indirectly banned puppy mills last year in California.
