Mass shootings have been a major problem in America in the last year and have continued to happen quite frequently. Lives are lost, wounds are inflicted, but people are also affected mentally by these experiences. The trauma that comes with living through a mass shooting is something that is not easily understood but it definitely real. When people are triggered by post-traumatic stress disorder, they can sometimes be ridiculed for it. Why would someone ridicule someone for struggling with stress after the fact? One woman stated, "I was told that I should just be thankful I'm alive. They couldn't understand why I was still struggling and upset." While we can definitely be thankful we are alive, that does not mean that we are not going to struggling with dealing with the events that took place. Those memories will likely haunt a person for a while after the fact. Be more understanding of what people are going through. Do not jump to conclusions and do not think that you always have the right answers.
