"They All Look The Same" Remark Explained

Australian Olympic analyst Jacqui Cooper was accused of “casual racism” on Thursday when her comment on the Chinese aerial freestyle skiers was misinterpreted and deemed racist. Lee Moran of Huffington Post looks into the controversy, where Cooper while commentating for Channel 7’s coverage of the event, said of the Chinese skiers: “Real nicely done, great control, very Chinese. They all look the same, they’re very hard to tell who’s who.” People on Twitter were quick to call her out, focusing on the phrase “They all look the same”. Shortly after, Cooper took to Twitter to clear up any confusion over her remark, explaining she was talking about the skier’s technical styles being the same, rather than their general appearance. “I need to make it clear I was talking about the jump. The Chinese are trained by one coach with one technique, their aim is all to jump the same.” Channel 7 also released a statement, defending Cooper with: “At no time was the commentary racist, intended to be racist or offensive,”
