A New York Times article written by Carlotta Gall and Melissa Eddy explains the unfortunate situation of Turkey. Turkey’s effort to repair relations with Europe and the United states is going rough, with concerns about their current state of emergency after the attempted coup that happened on July 2016. The resulting crackdown in response to the coup led to the restrictions of freedoms among many people in Turkey. The concerns were voiced by many nations, with Thorbjorn Jagland, the secretary general of the Council of Europe saying “Measures taken must be strictly proportionate to the situation and limited in time”. There were also concerns that Mr. Erdogan, the President of Turkey, was using this state of emergency to disrupt democratic norms within the country.
