143 Million People May Soon Become Climate Migrants

“Climate change will transform more than 143 million people into “climate migrants” escaping crop failure, water scarcity, and sea-level rise, a new World Bank report concludes” (https://news.nationalgeographic.com/2018/03/climate-migrants-report-world-bank-spd/)

The three main spots where migration will take place are Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia and Latin America, which represent 55% of the world’s population.  Additional to the climate migrants, there is a cross-border migration consisting on refugees and migrants fleeing war, poverty and oppression.

Due to climate migrations, the population will move towards the urban areas, therefore the cities need to be prepared to receive a large amount of people.

Some studies assure that if the world reduces greenhouse gas emissions, the climate migrants could be reduced by 80% to only 40 million. (1 image, 1 link, 1 quotation, 142 words)
