Hungarian Journalists Creates New Site After Controversy

Hungarian investigative journalist Andras Petho wrote an article about expensive overseas business trips taken by the chief of staff to Prime Minister Viktor Orban for the website "Origo.hu." However, Orban's government did not take the criticism lightly by any manner. The government would gather resources in "pro-government outlets and used financial pressures and lawsuits to intimidate critical outlets." In a way, the higher officials were trying to silence opposing opinions in order to make the organization look better. Due to the governments harsh restriction, the Origo's editor in chief, Gergo Saling, resigned as well as a majority of the staff because of political pressure. Since they were unemployed, Petho and a number of other former journalists created a new site, Direkt36. The purpose was to have the freedom to cover any event without being restricted by a certain outlook that they were forced to have.  [1 image, 2 links, 1 quotation, 145 words]
