The murder of a 27-year-old
investigative reporter, Jan Kuciak, and his partner is being investigated as it
is highly likely his death is connected to his reporting. While working on a
story covering tax evasion, Kuciak received threats from those who he had
exposed. Kuciak's colleagues responded to his death with, “If this crime was an attempt to discourage an independent
publisher such as Ringier Axel Springer not to pursue revelations about
breaking the law, we will use this occasion for further strengthening of our
journalistic responsibility.” Although Slovakia is a country which protects
free expression, Kuciak is not the first journalist to wind up dead after
exposing corruption among politicians.
