The New York Times reports, “Les Payne, a fervid and fearless Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter, columnist and editor for Newsday who helped pave the way for a generation of black journalists, died on Monday in Manhattan.” Payne died of a heart attack. Since the beginning of his career for the Long Island paper, Newsday, he exposed racial inequality. He was a founding member and president of the National Association of Black Journalists. Payne was also in the army for many years. He ended his time in the army as a captain. He won a Pulitzer Prize for his series on South Africa. [1 link, 1 image, 101 words, 1 quote]
