New Gene Therapy
On Tuesday, March 20, Jack Hogan, a 13 year-old boy, was the first person to receive treatment for a inherited retinal disease that has been approved by the FDA. The retinal disease is caused "by mutations in the RPE65 gene". This treatment has allowed people who are blind to see and those with poor eyesight to see very minute details in every day life for the first time by using gene therapy to "produce enzymes that will allow the eye to process light".The introduction of this new gene therapy is the beginning of an amazing journey in medicine that will change many lives.
