Photographer Captures Drug War

Lawrence Sumulong, a New York based photographer, is the son of a blacklisted Filipino who was exiled to the U.S. in 1980. With that being said, he had a strong connection to the Philippines. When he visited this past year, he tried to capture the trauma of President Rodrigo Duterte's war on drug users and dealers. Due to the war, at least 12,000 people have been killed in cold blood. Sadly, he explains that "the most shocking part of to is the normalcy of it." Sumulong decided to photograph "forensic-style photos that give the city the feel of a crime scene." To give outsiders a more emotional outlook on the situation, he asked those affected to write a letter to the person they had lost. The reason Lawrence Sumulong decided to capture the brutality of the drug war is to raise awareness in terms of revisiting the topic. [1 image, 1 link, 2 quotations, 146 words]
