Al
Jazeera’s, Ashish Malhotra, reports the outbreak of diphtheria in the refugee
camps of
Bangladesh, and focuses on the influence of the current political
climate in Myanmar upon the
health and wellbeing of the Rohingya people. While
discussing the living conditions of the
Rohingya refugees within the camps,
Malhotra mentions that a camp such as Cox’s bazar “is a
densely populated site
where sanitation and hygiene are often poor”, making those in refugee
camps
more susceptible to disease. Another factor that has played a role in the
diphtheria
outbreak within the Rohingya refugee population is the denial of
diphtheria vaccinations to the
Rohingya people in Myanmar, as a result of the
current political climate. [116 words, 1 quote, 1
