Recently,
many people across the nation have become concerned for the safety of their
children;
the tragic incident which took place at Douglas High School in
Parkland, Florida has sparked
debate on what exactly should be done to combat
the rapid increase in mass school shootings.
Audra D.S. Burch from the New York
Times focuses on this issue through the eyes of students
and parents affected
by this horrific event, and emphasizes that “their [the students’] urgent
voices are now rising in the national debate over gun violence in the aftermath
of yet another
school shooting.” Burch mentions the use of social media to
promote this debate, as many high
school students have utilized such platforms
to create hashtags to stand in solidarity against gun
violence, and to inform
certain politicians about their failure to take action, and the role their
ignorance has played in allowing such events to occur.
