Journalists Constantly Saying Pyeongchang All Wrong

The South Korean host city of the 2018 Winter Olympic Games is on the lips of journalists all around the world. The United States has had constant coverage of the event since it began a week ago. So why are all of these American news outlets pronouncing the city of the games, Pyeongchang, incorrectly? Have they not had time in the days, weeks, months leading up to the event to learn the correct pronunciation?
New York Times writer Cecilia Kang was not impressed. “PSA Olympics Reporters: Get help with pronouncing Pyeongchang. "Pyeong" is one syllable and pronounced "pyoung". "Chang" has a soft "a"...like nails on chalkboard what i'm hearing.”

Asian American Journalists Association had to publish a video with a journalist explaining and enunciating the proper pronunciation. However, this was not before ABC Chicago aired a segment called “P.F. Chang 2018”. (1 image, 2 links, 1 quotation, 141 words).
