Layoff in the Amazon

As recently reported by Matt Day at The Seattle Times, the multi-billion dollar online retailer known as Amazon has gone through an instance of many layoffs within their world headquarters. This comes as a result of a hiring spree from the company that saw the total number of employees at their headquarters skyrocket from 5,000 in 2010 all the way to 40,000. Jeff Bezos, chief executive of Amazon, described the environment that the employees were working in as very stressful, to the point where people are falling into terrible shape. Cutting off many employees in the overpopulated environment was seen as a strategy to "put more pressure on managers to weed out lower performers and enforce spending discipline after the rapid growth of recent years".
