An Austrian snowboarder’s Olympic dreams came to a halt Thursday when he broke his neck during a quarterfinals competition. Three-time Olympian, Markus Schairer, was going down a slope during the men’s snowboard cross quarterfinals when he lost control mid-air and landed on his back; his protective goggles flew off during the crash landing. "Schairer stayed on the ground for a few moments before finishing his ride down the hill. He broke the fifth cervical vertebra in his neck during the crash." His injuries didn't cause any permanent damage. The committee said Schairer will return to Austria for further treatment. [1 image, 1 link, 1 quotation, 99 words]
