All her life, Harper Lee was never interested in publicity. She never even imagined becoming a Pulitzer prized winning writer. However, her manuscript for To Kill a Mockingbird was published, and the publicity was more than she could handle. Her novel "[impacted the] country's conscience and character" (Sutton). It caused America to realize the corruption and injustice in the very racist South. Lee's novel became an iconic part of the Civil Rights movement. Although high school students dread the mention of the book, it created a cultural wave of change in the country. "Lee constructed a book that became a moral compass" (Sutton).
