What's A Muckraker?

During the Progressive Era of America in the late 1800s to early 1900s, there were a particular group of journalists whose goal was to expose major issues in order to support reforms. These people were called the muckrakers, journalists who helped rake out the musk of corruption and problems in America. As much as a nuisance they were to the government, they helped push some reform movements to success, such as Black Codes and social disorder. Although there were already a few of them before the Progressive Era, "Publishing a series of article had a much more immediate impact" (ushistory.com). Though the government tried to resist this new form of journalism, "the pen [was] sharper than the sword," and America radically changed with ideas like Child Labor laws and temporary temperance (ushistory.com). Muckrakers were a primary reason for progressive changes in America.
