A Trip Through Antarctica

Alexandre Meneghini of Reuters recently underwent a journey in which he documented his travels throughout Antarctica. However, this journey was organized by a climate-focused activist group called Greenpeace. Meneghini states that its purpose is to support “a European Union proposal to create the biggest protected area on Earth in Antarctica.” This ambitious proposal and effort’s purpose is to protect the local wildlife from overfishing. Meneghini reports that the group’s main efforts reside in the protection of the local krill population. This species in particular is what most of the larger wildlife subsists on. According to Meneghini, these larger species include “penguins, whales and seals.” Allowing this species’ continued overfishing would upset the delicate Antarctic ecosystem.
