With the recent rise of ‘fake news’, a new trend has been
set; journalism schools. For example, Columbia University’s Graduate School of
journalism has reported to have experienced a 10% increase for the upcoming
school year. Many believe the current political climate is the leading cause of
this rising field of work. Although this industry had experienced drastic
downfall due to free online news outlets, “ News organizations including The New
York Times and The Washington Post have said they’ve seen
spikes in subscriptions since President Donald Trump’s election”.
Zoe Ginsberg, a journalist major, mentioned her concern that “we (students)
haven’t been paying attention and holding government officials accountable
enough for their actions,” as one of her motivations to become a journalist and
fight fake news.
