
In South Sudan, Donald D. McNeil Jr. reports on their eradication of Guinea Worms. Even though this is the newest country, gaining independence from Sudan in 2011, they have astonishingly stopped an epidemic in its tracks. Ponds like the one displayed above used to be infested with these worms but due to persistent efforts no new cases of Guinea worms have been documented for over a year. Although there still are cases of Guinea Worms in neighboring countries like Ethiopia and Chad. Dr. Riek Gai Kok states “Future generations will just read of Guinea worm in the books as history" (McNeil)
