In 1979, China's population was nearing the one billion mark. The communist leaders took action to slow population growth and implemented the "one child policy." Recently, this was modified to a two-child policy in 2015. Journalist Jason McLure analyzes the intended and unintended affects this had on the demographics of the Chinese population. He observes that "By 2050, fully 40 percent of the population could be over that age [65] and the country is projected to have 100 million people 80 and over." The author further explains that this is alarming due to the lack of working age individuals that are able to care for the elderly. This was an unintentional result of the one child policy and a consequence that they will have to overcome. http://globaljournalist.org/2018/03/chinas-one-child-legacy-program/
