Victor Riesel, Journalist Attacked by Gangster
It was a typical day in New York City on April 5th, 1956 that is, before an incident occurred that would occupy national headlines for years afterward. Victor Riesel was an "American newspaper journalist and columnist who specialized in news related to labor unions" was reporting on corruption in New York City. He wore eyeglasses but typically removed them in public. When Riesel took off his glasses near the Mark Hellinger Theatre, a man stepped out of the shadows and threw a vial of sulphuric acid into his eyes. This attack caused many face deformities and caused Riesel to go blind. Joseph Carlino was accused of hiring an individual to attack Riesel and pleaded guilty in court on October 22nd. Even though the attacker has been caught, his motives are still unclear. [1 image, 1 quotation, 1 link, 123 words]
