The Gift of Freedom

In the United States, we are protected by certain unalienable rights. One of these, one that is often taken for granted and may not even be thought of on the day-to-day, is the freedom of speech. As Americans, we are entitled to free speech and journalism is not regulated as it is in other countries. As stated by the Washington Post, "the press freedom we know in the United States is not the norm in most parts of the globe". The map pictured above demonstrates the areas of the world and where journalism is free, partly free, and absolutely not free. Journalism has progressively become more dangerous throughout the years. According to recent findings, journalism has led to the death of eighteen journalists in 2017 and at least 262 experienced imprisonment. A journalist by the name of Jason Rezaian shared his story of imprisonment in Iran where he was denied all rights, held for 544 days, and accused of spying for the U.S. government. Mr. Rezaian was simply doing his job, which is the case for most journalists who are arrested in countries where freedom of speech and press is much more regulated and restricted. The same patterns are expressed themselves this year,  and does not show signs of improving. Journalism is a right that is taken for granted and many do not experience the freedoms that Americans do.
