The Hunt for 50MPG

American cars efficiency has been driven by government regulations since they began imposing them midst the Ford Presidency in the mid 70's. These stricter MPG guidelines force these companies to keep innovating, and without them the drive to improve gas mileage for the consumer just doesnt exist. Francois Millette says "It does start with government regulations, whether those are CAFE standards or CARB setting new standards to limit emissions." Without these vital "carrots" from the government, I fear we would see the progress towards fuel-efficient cars come to a screeching halt.
